cannot get sound to work at all, SUSE 10.1, ThinkPad a31 type 2652-M3U

I recently installed SUSE Linux 10.1 on my IBM ThinkPad (a31 type 2652-M3U). as far as I know, its just a generic AC97 audio onboard... but no matter what I try, I can't get sound to work.

anyone have ideas?

thanks!

From a console, run 'hwinfo --sound'. It should identify the sound card, the driver needed, whether or not the driver is active, and the command to activate it if it is not active.

at the command line type "su" then press enter (no quotes)
should ask for your root password. after this retype the command. Good luck

I don't know if this matters at all, but I have a Thinkpad A31, 2652-M3U
(NOT a T-series)

the sound acts as if its working, but I hear nothing.

it worked fine in windows xp when that was loaded.

This link may be of interest. Many of the individuals in this discussion were able to fix the problem with an install of ALSA from scratch.
