Cannot boot computer after installing Ubuntu

Hey guys,

I just got a refurbished computer and after installing Ubuntu, computer refuses to boot and instead displays screen with message:

"Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready...."

I tried reinstalling Linux twice (from a usb and from a cd) and the problem persists.

I have a Toshiba Portege R930 which originally had a Windows 7 and I installed Ubuntu 16.04.2

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Thankyou xx

Is it EFI or BIOS. If BIOS, check BIOS to make sure system set to boot from hard disk.

Same model! Sometimes web-search of error, plus a few more keywords, like linux install, gets lucky!

Welcome to LQ! Let us know how it goes.

p.s. LQ search has an option for "Search Titles Only"
(pulldown, under Keywords, instead of the default of Entire Posts);
try the keyword UEFI;
also, button at bottom, "Show Results as" Threads, instead of Posts.

This is because the bootloader has not been installed properly. During the install there is an option where you choose where to install the bootloader. If it is MBR, you choose /dev/sda and if it is UEFI you choose the EFI partition (e.g. /dev/sda1). Try to find out what it is? You can find this out if you boot the live USB and use gparted to check out the hard disk partition table (you can post a screenshot here). If there is an EFI partition there and it is GPT you know it is UEFI, else it is MBR.

Seeing that you had Windows 7, it is probably MBR. In that case, it is easy. Check this out: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing. The section Fixing a broken system/via the Live CD terminal will surely help.

Hello and welcome to LQ.

As noted above. "Insert system disk in drive." means you are not booting to a correctly configured drive. Either bios is wrong or install is wrong. Very few other common issues.
