I have tried Ubuntu 11.10 fedora 16 and Linux mint 11. With both Ubuntu and mint I only get a black screen after trying to boot the a bootable CD. Fedora will installed but after I update the software I get a black screen after rebooting. I have a very new laptop with a radeon graphics card. Any suggestions?
What options have you tried? Only the basic startup selections or did you try thing like passing noapic for example to the kernel boot line? Did you start from CD/DVD, USBS, ... Also, provide some specifics about your laptop so that we might at least have an idea on what hardware you're trying to install. There are a lot of Radeon graphics cards but the problem might be other hardware. So the more information you provide, the better we might be at providing any help.
I have an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC with AMD A8-3500M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 1.50 GHz and 8.00 GB of RAM. I am currently running windows 7 64bit. I have tried install from both USB and CD, but CD seems to be working a lot better than USB. I have been able to install Ubuntu 10.04, but when I upgrade to 11.10 I get a black screen again. As far as noapic options I was suggested to trying on of those option, but I can't remember which one. I was able to go though the whole installation process, but after rebooting I was greeted with the normal black screen again. My computer was just released about one or two months ago and I'm thinking that the drivers are too new and haven't been added to the repositories yet, but I have no idea.
I know that I can install Ubuntu 10.04 onto my computer because that release doesn't use the graphics card like the newer versions of Ubuntu do, but my wireless card will only work with the Latest version of Ubuntu. I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 and upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10. I had to try to re-install Ubuntu because the mouse wasn't working very well and programs would randomly terminate. I will try to install Linux Mint 9 or Ubuntu 10.04 and run through the process again. Could you tell me the main differences between Ubuntu and Linux Mint. I know that Linux Mint is based off of Ubuntu, Linux Mint is a rolling release and that they have different user interfaces.

Hello,
Linux Mint as most people know it is not a rolling release. The Linux Mint distro is based on the latest Ubuntu, for example Linux Mint 12 (Lisa) is based on Ubuntu 11.10. The one you are referring to as rolling release is Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), which is NOT based on Ubuntu but on Debian testing with some of the Linux Mint magic on top of it.
