Question Booting on PCMCIA HDD

I got this pcmcia hdd i want to boot on a old 486, i got no cdrom or floppydrives for the 486 wich is a laptop.

I install the DamnSmallLinux from a DSL live CD, @ another laptop, and find the pcmcia hdd in the live enviroment, the hdd in the laptop i install on is named /dev/hde, on the 486 it is named /dev/hda

How do i configure lilo for booting?

All i get now is kernelpanic: VFS, cannot mount root on 2101 someting..

So on the p3 laptop wich i used to install the os to the hdd i
mount /dev/hde1 /home/hde
then i vi edit /home/hde/etc/lilo.conf and change all the hde to hda

then i have to run lilo
but when i try it runs the standard lilo and not the lilo on hde1.

is there a way to pick wich lilo to run?
or is my problem someting else?

By default lilo uses /etc/lilo.conf but you can specify a different file using the -C flag.

Well, all the lilo -C /home/hde/etc/lilo.conf said was
(/home/hde is where i currently have the drive mounted)
Fatal: open /dev/hda: No such device or address

I edited the conf file to work for the 486, where the hdd is hda
the computer i install or edit the harddrive from it is hde
