What does dmesg report after you put it in? You should be able to find what kind of event it registered which will tell you what type of device (/dev/sda1 for example) to mount.
I`m using a PCMCIA card reader with my notebook. The flash cards in the card reader are named in the IDE schema (in my case /dev/hde). It seems /dev/hda to /dev/hdd are reserved for the IDE controller, so /dev/hde will be the next available device name.
