We have two ... Lenovo ThinkPad T61 and T420 ... both work well with Linux kernels 2.6.39 through 3.1.1.

The distro should not matter as much as the kernel, and your ability to build software from source if needed.

For the same amount of money you can buy three or more comparable laptops, just not built as durable as a ThinkPad.

Hm. About durability: 2 of my co workers had Lenovos - a R61 and a T61. Both batteries failed within a year or so. One of them (the r61 i think), anyway the lower-end one, has a burnt video card (nvidia NVS 140M) meaning a MB replacement (but the T61 too has the same card so...). Given their price, i dont know what to say about durability.
Just for the record, my Latitude Dell D630 had the MB replaced because the vid card burned (nvidia Quadro NVS 135M).
And the guys at the Lenovo repair centre said that many laptops (high and low end) with dedicated vid cards had these issues.

Personally i would recommend an integrated card, those dont have these issues. If you want some real 3D, look at the AMDs A series, those have pretty good integrated cards (which, the CPU-wise better intels dont) + good Linux support with the latest catalyst drivers (the Intel video drivers, as always, are crap on Linux compared to Windows). Also the A series AMD chips have good power management, they las as long as Intel does and under GPU load even more.

I've had Thinkpad T410 for just over a year now. I'm very happy with it. No problems so far.
I wrote a brief review of it on HCL.

I've a Thinkpad X220, it runs great with Gnu/Linux, like most Thinkpads. Debian (stable) uses old software including the kernel, and with my laptop, which is quite new, the kernel needs to be upgraded from backports or something to work acceptable
