Looks like you are complete newbie

Press ctrl - alt- F1 and login as root.

#> init 3

#> cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_BACKUP

Hope you know to use vi - editor

#> vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Go to: Section "Screen"
Now go to the line:
Go to Subsection "Display"

change the Modes line:
Modes "1280x800" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Change the values based on your laptop screen.

Save the file. Now as root

#> init 5

wait a few seconds. you will have correct desktop.

(Remember changing your screen to a wrong values *may* damage the screen)

It would be good if you join your local LUG Linux users group.

Only problem with that is does he or she have a users group near them? They could be like me and live out in the boonies. Nearest group to me is over two hour drive. As it is were lucky if we find anybody using xp lot of ppl up here are still using 98. Just try and ask about Linux and get odd looks and even had to tell the person that thinks they run an upto date computer store what Linux is much less find somebody else here that uses it.

You'll need to install ndiswrapper to make wireless work, search the forum for instructions and/or go to www.tuxmobil.org and www.linux-on-laptops.org and look for your modell. I have tried Mandrake on the same laptop, but I'm not a big fan of mandrake/mandriva so I wont comment.

LOL, why dont I ever check the dates
