Acer & FC4 sound locks up system

Hello boys & girls,
I have loaded FC4 on my Acer TM 4500 and the install went smoothly until I got to the 1st boot config. When I got to the sound test page and I clicked on the test button the machine locked up. FC4 correctly noted the audio was an Intel 82801DB AC '97 Audio Controller. I rebooted and had the same problem. Next time I bypassed this step and the rest booted fine. I tried using the suggestion I found in LQ such as using the Alsamixer to unmute and 'modprobe snd-intel8x0' to load drivers. And again anytime I use Alsamixer or any config the program will stop responding.
If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.
thanks,
ogee
