Kernel Compilation error in Cent OS 5


Dear Friends,

I am a newbie in linux & not able to compile kernel successfully in Cent OS 5.6. My kernel version is 2.6.18-238.el5 & i want to upgrade this with kernel version linux-2.6.39.4.

After compiling & booting with new kernel i received following error.

mount: could not find file system '/dev/root'
Setting up other filesystems.
Setting up new root fs
setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory
Switching to new root and running init.
unmounting old /dev
unmounting old /proc
unmounting old /sys
switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Could be your initrd didn't load device drivers because they weren't compiled? You could extract the .spec file from the most recent working Centos .src.rpm kernel package to feed that to your kernel building process, list your hardware for chipset information to ensure you compile all drivers you need. Inspect and if necessary recreate your initrd to ensure all device drivers are loaded.
