ata sort resetting port

Hi Penguins!

Question is:
What happened? (Is this a problem??)

My Debian/etch kernel 2.6.18.6 says in console (and dmesg /var/log/messages)
Code:
ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x80000 action 0x2 frozen
ata1.00: (BMDMA stat 0x20)
ata1.00: tag 0 cmd 0xc8 Emask 0x2 stat 0x58 err 0x0 (HSM violation)
ata1: soft resetting port
ata1: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100
ata1: EH complete
SCSI device sda: 78140160 512-byte hdwr sectors (40008 MB)
sda: Write Protect is off
sda: Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00
SCSI device sda: drive cache: write back
Then penguin stays alive without any defect.

And web says various opinions.

I do not think I have seen this with 2.6.17(16,15,14) kernels. It looks like some problem..

Hardware is

I am totally lost. I will appreciate any input.

Happy Penguins!

Somewhere around 2.6.18, they started a big migration of SATA code. You might consider loading the 2.6.19.3 kernel and seeing if that fixes it.

Added:
By the way, which SATA controller does your machine have?

Hi,

Thanks for your comment.

1. 2.6.19 kernel does not kick in (2.6.19.2/3, 2.6.20) Problem looks like related....
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=507224

2. SATA controller is ATI 4379, version 80.

Happy Penguins!
