Question Xsane doesn't recognize Brother MFC 3360C

The device (an all-in-one printer/scanner) shows up in HAL device manager, but Xsane doesn't detect it.

Must I manually install a driver or a wrapper for the Windows driver? I'm really puzzled that HAL device manager sees the device but Xsane doesn't. Please let me know if you need more information from other diagnostic commands I can run at the command line. Thank you for your help.

You may need to run xsane as root or to change permissions. It didn't work with my Epson either - until I found that it's a matter of permissions.

Question Xsane doesn't recognize Brother MFC 3360C

Thank you, but Xsane doesn't recognize the unit when run as root, either.

Can you use the printer or is it just the scanner?

Look around at http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/
and grab the sane driver.
Brother is pretty good at developing new Linux drivers for their stuff.

Thumbs up Brother MFC 3360C success!

thank you, BryantRV, that was the solution. Downloaded the -.deb package and installed its driver according to the well-written instructions on Brother's site and now Xsane recognizes the scanner portion of the unit and it scans like a charm. I may or may not worry later about downloading a CUPS driver or CUPS wrapper for the printer function, as I already have a printer functioning under CUPS. I must say, I will give Brother great consideration in the future for purchasing output devices as they seem most dedicated to supporting the Linux community. Thank you again, BryantRV.
