Unhappy X-server can not start

HI, I'm a newbie to linux and i installed it (redhat 9) on my dell inspireron 8000 laptop. intallation went fine but when i run the linux
x-server will not start.ow I had to guess my moniter type because it wasn't found by the probe.

on RHL8 you had the ability to test configuration untill you figured out wich one. that option is gone on nine.

How do I go about chaning it to the proper moniter?

Also I plan On running it on my desktop where i have a planar moniter and I don't want to run into the same problem.

Thanks in advance

Try the xf86config command. That should give you text-based "wizard" to walk you through re-configuring X. It would probably be wise to look at the manual for your laptop or go to the manufactuers website and find the exact settings for your monitor. Sometimes the probe doesn't work, so you'll probably have to specify the settings. Don't just guess at monitor settings, on older computers that can literally be dangerous.
