Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Would this make a good server?

Hello,

My friend picked up a server for free, and gave it to me. Im new to servers, and going to be installing CentOS on it Monday.

What do you think of this server?
syphon5.com/server.html <-- cannot post links yet, it has pictures

Quote:
Dual Intel pentium III EB 1000mhz
1.5GB SDRAM
7 Harddrives, around 300GB total
Gigabyte GA-6VTXD(1.0) Motherboard
Does it have any good potential for game hosting or as a file/web server? Do you know what size in the industry theyd call that? 3U?

Thanks,
Stevo

How fast is the network connection? If this is for a DSL attached home network, then that server won't even break a sweat even at maximum network load. Plain web servers really don't suck up as much CPU power as one might think. You probably put more load on a CPU + filesystem by compiling a kernel or making big images with an image processing tool. If the server is going to run a heavily used backend database, then it is good to have some speed. I have a web server that gets a few hundred hits a day (which is not a lot), and it runs on a K6 running RH7.3 It works just fine for that.

I have a Cable connection at home.

I was also talking to some people, thinking about getting it in a colocation datacenter in a few months.
