Weird problem with a Terratec Aureon Space

I am using Slackware 10, kernel 2.6.9. The problem is concerning my sound card, a Terratec Aureon Space 7.1. I only get sound on the two front speakers, wheteher i play music in xmms, movies in mplayer etc. To answer any 'have you...' questions, here's what i've tried/done so far :
- compiled kernel with support for my sound card
- alsamixer correctly detects the sound card and i have maxxed every volume control available. There are some controls i do not understand in alsamixer, though (like IEC958, H/W)
- i have the latest alsa drivers installed (1.0.7)
- envy24control does not detect my sound card (although i repeat - alsamixer does): "No ICE1712 cards found"
- i have a GENIUS SW 5.1 HT speaker system which works fine (tested it in Windows), all the cables are inserted correctly in the sound card.
Hope the above cover most questions one might ask about my problem...Thankyou for any advice.
