WD Harddrive Problems

I replaced a WD-12G-5400RPM with a WD-60G-7200RPM and fresh installs of XP Pro and Slackware 8.1. On both systems I have a 30 second pause in loading. In Slack it's after "startx" and the desktop. In XP it's between the "welcome" and the desktop. In Slack, when you logoff the desktop it doesn't return to the console mode. Since it's a problem with both systems the problem would logically be in the BIOS but I haven't a clue.

Could be some kind of hardware conflict as well. Not totally sure but sounds to me its definitely not software but is hardware. Try eliminating some unecessary hardware and try to see it does the same thing or not, with different combinations.

Don't know if it's actually a conflict but the onboard graphics was the culprit. I added an ATI graphics card and all is well.
