Video problem

I have a VX700 monitor from Gateway and was working fine a week ago. Then I tried to install 3D support for a nVidia Corporation NV11DDR [GeForce2 MX 100 DDR/200 DDR] (rev b2). That is the direct output of lspci. After following the advice on the ubuntu How-to article about this, it failed to work and X wouldn't start up. I then entered the command dpkg-reconfigure -Phigh xserver-xorg. Now I have X and Gnome, but the monitor will dim and resize the screen (make it bigger) and then go back to normal. Also some of my screensavers no longer work. My backup of the xorg file doesn't work either. What have I missed? What other files do I need? Do I need to uninstall the package I downloaded for the card?

Secondly, how do I get this to work? I would like to play some games.

Are there some Error messages starting x directly with "X"?
Is the monitor out of Sync? (Does it show a message) Try to comment out the Line > Option "DPMS < in the Sction "Monitor" and a two lines >HorizSync 28-72< >VertRefresh 43-60< (you have to take the values from *your* monitor!)

After it works fine what does glxinfo show: is there a line >direct rendering: Yes< ???

Maybe the most Important: Which linux do you have?

No error messages when sartx is used. glx originally showed no on direct rendering. I have since downloaded and installed the correct drivers and now have 3D, but the display is still doing that weird thing.

I think this might be the problem. I origonally misread the driver list and installed the old driver. As I said earlier, I have fixed that, but the old driver cannot be removed for some reason. Could this be the problem? Also I will try the monitor settings when I get back from work and let you know how they worked.

Finally got around to fixing the monitor lines in xorg.conf. Since this is an occasional problem, I won't know if it is fixed for a day or two, but so far so good.
