vectorlinux and compaq 5i smart array raid controller

I'm trying to install VectorLinux on an old 4x PIII DL580 with a 5i Smart Array RAID controller. VectorLinux default install won't recognize the RAID. is there some way i can just download the linux kernel module for this hardware and insmod it in there so the installation will successfully find the RAID? If so, where can i find the kernel module (or any kernel module for that matter... i just know they exist, no idea where to look).

If not, is there a way to ninja a larger kernel into the install and burn a new iso with everything the same except the kernel? will that work?

or am i totally off...?

edit: please do not recommend alternate distros unless they are slackware/linux based... and redhat/mandrake don't count... and certainly do not recommend alternate hardware. waste of your time and my thread.
