USR 5610 PCI Modem + MDK9.2 won't work

Hello,

I just installed Mandrake 9.2 and it won't detect my USR 5610 PCI modem correctly. It works perfectly in Redhat 9, Knoppix 3.3, and Windows 98. Under Redhat 9, /dev/modem is symlinked to /dev/ttyS4. cat /proc/pci from both Redhat and Mandrake shows:

Bus 0, device 11, function 0:
Serial controller: 5610 56K FaxModem 56K FaxModem Model 5610 (rev 1).
IRQ 10.
I/O at 0xdff0 [0xdff7].

In Mandrake, /dev/ttyS4 is symlinked to /dev/ttys/4. The modem appears as an "Other" device in drakconf. I tried kppp and setting the device to all the different serial ports, no luck. When I run drakconf2 from a command line, it warns that it can't modprobe serial. But, my serial mouse on /dev/ttyS0 works. The modem is a controller-based one that is supposed to be specifically supported by the linux kernel, and works fine in everything but MDK 9.2. Any ideas? I really like MDK 9.2, except I kind of need my modem...

Thanks a lot!

Solution

Turns out this is a documented bug. The following directions should work anyone else with exactly the same problem:

Strange, I have a USR 3CP5610 and it works fine, even with MD 9.2 when I had it loaded for a test drive last week.

There's basically two different areas you might want to tweak: TCP/IP settings and browser settings. Chances are it's more of an illusion created by the browser, rather than actual throughput/bandwidth.

Try these links:

What I want to know is: Is there anything for Linux that lets me take advantage of V.92 specific features, such as Internet Call Notification (ICN)?
