USB problems with GeForce8200 chipset

Hi!
I'm having problems with USB on this computer. Whenever I plug an USB device (mass storage or HID) I lose control of my keyboard and/or mouse (both USB) a few moments after plugging the device. It's quite constant and happens regardless of the device. The mouse and keyboard work fine most of the time, with ocasional stopping.

I think it's not related to X - it happens even on console mode. I tried to compile other versions of the kernel (2.6.28, and tried 2.6.26 too), but it didn't help the problem.

When the mouse stops, I can't even do crl+alt+backspace or crl+alt+F1 to close X and try to restart it - though the keyboard works fine, the computer freezes when trying to close X.
Could anyone give me a hand with that?

Wink

Hi, I have had similar problems recently.

My Main-Board is an asus with the nVidia 730a chipset.

Described as a gf8200 in most circles, however Mine does not have onboard graphics. (gf8200)

I found that upgrading xorg to 7.3 broke my system in a similar way to your description.

By regressing to xorg 7.1 , and it's deps,

Mind you, removing these packages may also break your system. I spent 4 days with the cli to get it back, my poor experiences.

Cheers, I hope that sheds some light in your direction.

regards, Glenn

ps. a clean install of your distro may be faster.

my prob in detail, and the answer I used...

I think it's not related to Xorg because even when X is not started the problem still happens (plugging device on console mode, I lose the keyboard). Thx for the hint tho.

I never heard or read that a program like HAL slowing responsiveness of input devices. Actually I have seen USB devices using more power that USB is rated slowing the responsiveness of input devices. If you have both the USB mouse and USB keyboard consuming close to 500 mA, you could loose responsiveness of input devices. Also not all computers can handle this spec. Usually they are under spec with out telling the builder or user. I suggest use PS/2 mouse and keyboard because they are more reliable than USB. By using a PS/2 mouse and keyboard, you will have more power to work with for USB. Could use an active USB hub to fix the problem or just spend more money on better quality systems or motherboards.

I don't think it was a hardware problem, since they now work fine and also worked okay on windows. If the problem was related to power consumption I think I would still have it after turning off hal, so I tend to believe it was software related and possibly a bug or a wrong configuration I made somewhere.
The devices were not exactly slowed down, they rather gone crazy. The mouse died out, but when it happened to the keyboard it would behave as if a key was stuck - you can't type anything, but a character would be constantly repeated as if the key was pressed. And the mouse was still powered. I only lost responsiveness, not power, and it would persist even when a device was plugged and unplugged.

I have a similar problem - my USB keyboard/mouse just stop working after a certain point.
What's interesting is that when this happens, it doesn't matter if X is running or not.
I can't plug in another keyboard or mouse either.

Is there a good way to bring BACK the keyboard and mouse when this happens, if I can ssh into the
computer from another one? I'd rather not have to reboot. Does switching off HAL at this point do the trick?

Also, something that might or might not be related:

during bootup, I also have USB detection problems, especially when I use a KVM switch.
1 out of 4 times, it boots up with all 4 cores, and then the mouse and keyboard stop working after a short time.
1 out of 4 times, it boots up with only 1 out of 4 cores, and then the mouse/keyboard work for a long time, the system is stable.
and 2 out of 4 times, it boots up and can't start up any of the cores (I keep seeing a "NOT RESPONDING" message
after 5 second timeouts), and I can't even get into linux. This seems to be before HAL does anything at all.

Connecting my keyboard/mouse directly to the computer instaed of the KVM switch made the "less than 4 cores" problem go away. now I always see 4 cores, but I lose my keyboard/mouse after a little while.

I will try disabling HAL and see if that solves my problem too. Thanks for the info.
