USB Modem in Fedora - Cant get to work

Deep breath....i need another shot of liquer

Modem Model - Netcomm USB 1200 NB Modem
Chipset - Acatel Telecom DynaMiTe
Running Fedora

I know these sorts of questions have been posted a few too many times, ive searched on google, and in this forum, and on the fedora site, and im still stuck at square one.

In the hardware profile thing, it shows my usb modem in the System Devices tab (think thats what it was called) but there are about 6 lines of just Acatel Telecom DynaMiTe Modem.

I tried using the internet setup "wizard", but it always wants to use my ethernet card with i have connected to a hub as a means to connect, which wont obviously work

I tried to setup the device in the network manager thing, when i use xDSL it just wont detect/respond to any /dev i choose, if i try to add anything, it just says inactive, and i cant make it active, my eth0 is active though.

I was under the impression usb was /dev/usb/ttyACM0 - 4 etc and ive selected those when trying to add a device in the network setup but it doesnt respond either

When i boot into linux, the line signal light on my modem is on, and so is my data xfer one, which is constantly on as well, although its not connected to the net.

In the System Device manager, it does say the driver for my modem is - unknown. Do i need to install a driver for it ? Ive searched all over for one and read that i do, and read that i dont, because the newer kernal would detect it.

I dont fully understand what im reading either, new to linux, ive ran an old redhat 6 or 7 before, and set up my old dial up modem on it fine, and i understand the very basic stuff like mounting cds and floppys, just seeing im on dsl now, id like to have a whack at setting up a webserver just to learn some new things.

Cant get my head around this dsl modem though..gunna scream..oh wait..another shot

If anyone can help, or give me a url of a primer of some sort, id very much appreciate your response.

Thanks

RE: USB Modem in Fedora ( Netcomm 1200 ) - Cant get to work

Hey Hysterical - no doubt you've found out what seems to be the eastiest solution for this dilema by now.......

I've been trawling the internet myself looking everywhere to see whether there has been any development or even a pointer as to how to setup my little black box of a netcomm modem in linux. Everywhere I look seems to say that 1200 is totally unsupported for Linux and Netcomm definately do not seem to be supplying any assistance on this one, so the overwhelming indication is to ditch the 1200 and get the 1300 model as this supports linux with its drivers from the offset.

However have two other ideas which may work as a temporary workaround.......psudo:genious hits......I have two pcs which I have running most of the time (both on xp unfortunately - I'll prob get kicked for this one, but its jus so much easier to use re games n working) and have been thinking I could just use the modem on the other xp machine n just gateway to the internet; OR maybe I could use Wine to open a Windows portal connect to the web through that n browse away........? prob won't work - but it's worth a shot.
If worse comes to worse, will just bite the bullet and grab the 1300.

Will post the results of my endeavour in case it will help out anyone else with this problem.

Laterdays
