USB Cable Modem and kernel help

Hello,

I am very new to the whole Linux thing. I have Mandrake 9.1 and for some reason the modem doesn't work. The modem is a Motorola Surfboard 4200. It is hooked up to the USB port. I had 8.1 and it worked fine but I couldn't get the sound working so beings that I know virtually nothing I took it out and put 9.1 in figureing maybe it would be a little more compatible. The sound works great and the modem is recognized but doesn't show up in the internet connection wizard. So I was thinking maybe I selected something during the install wich has shut off the modem. I also have been looking around the forums and found some things that may work but when I go into the control config part it has an option to read the kernel. When I check it, it tells me that it cannot be read and there is a something missing (I Think) or I have just found a bug. So I guess the big question is how do I get into the kernal to read it? Thanks in advance for all the help. oh I tried make config or something like that and it didn't work could you also tell me maybe why and what I should have typed. Thanks Again.

OK here is the error that I get in control center:

Cannot open /usr/src/linux/arch//config.in for reading. Either your Kernel sources contain invalid configuration rules or you just found a bug in the KDE Kernel configurator.

The source path at the top is /usr/src/linux.
