Angry Unable to connect to X from xterm

After a recent apt-get upgrade (aka apt-get break) I can no longer get xterm to connect to X11. I've got DISPLAY set correctly and I've tried to use xhost to allow connections, but it just timesouts. I can run programs from gnome/ice menus, but I can't start anything from the console. Any idea if I've configured something wrong?
