Unhappy unable to connect to internet using motorola sm56 modem


hi,
i work on red hat linux ver 9 .0.i use an sm56 internal motorola modem .
i downloaded the modem driver from motorola.com (.rpm) & installed it successfully.
i used kppp(GUI) dialer to connect to internet.
i selected modem device as /dev/modem , Query modem says my modem is busy
in windows i am able to conenct to internet (thru dialup) via com3 or com4
so i selected modem device as /dev/Stty2 , but Query modem says unable to connect to modem
so i selected modem device as /dev/Stty3 , but Query modem says unable to connect to modem
and i get the same message for all the other modem devices.
please help me.
i am completely frustrated with windows & want to discard it.
