Hey Ben!, that's my problem too
I have an ATI Rage Fury Pro, with both the Svideo out and the composite out as well (RCA). The only way I have "successfully" gotten video out to my TV was with Mplayer. I use the -vo vesa option and it sends the signal to the TV; however the problem is that after it does the movie playback, it simply returns me back to a black screen after, at which time I have to reboot, remove the plug from the back of the TV (so the VESA doesn't get detected) and then everything goes fine from there.
The latest problem with that I have run into was FB, or framebuffering. It would start out just fine, give me the BIOS boot, then as soon as Linux would start, the TV would go blank, and my monitor would give me the "out of Range" screen. I re-modified my kernel a pinch, and now it's running great, but still get the black screen and a reboot after each movie.
Anyway, I hope this at least helps you to a point, knowing that you could use mplayer for it... And that there is someone else in this situation (and I have searched till my fingers bled, but to no avail as well). I have been contemplating getting a new card, something that has more support for things like this, but that's kinda sucky and pricey.
Cool
