Turtle Beach Montego DDL 5.1 not 4.1

I bought a Turtle Beach Montego DDL, having found that it's supported by linux. Also important to me is the 5.1 channels, and optical i/o.

The card worked out of the box except it won't play from the front speaker. The 4 speakers in the corners and the subwoofer seem to play fine. How (if possible) do I make the front speaker work? It's wired properly, it works in Windows (the Turtle Beach demo is very impressive).

There are surprisingly few channels in alsamixer. I'm used to having 50 with the soundblaster live Is there a way to control the volume for the rear speakers separately? I would like to have them play louder since they are much farther from me.

Also while looking for answers I found a mention that the optical I/O doesn't work in linux. Is this true? I don't have a device to test it with, but it will seriously suck if I get a nice receiver and I can't use it from linux.

I'm using Slackware 11.0 with kernel 2.6.17.13, sound card shows up in lspci as Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)

Thanks in advance.

Same Card

I have the same card but am having trouble getting the 5.1 to work correctly. The sound in Linux sounds much better for some reason, but I don't have the control that I did in windows. I am getting the optical cable to work perfectly, but again, no 5.1. The reason I like this card is the ability to have it turn any source into 5.1 and having it output through one single cable, instead of having 30 cables coming out of my computer. Great sound, No 5.1 (yet). Linux Ubuntu 7.04
