time for a new home printer. any experiences with new Epson CX4450?

The time to retire my old Lexmark Z51 for my home office. I saw an ad today for Epson CX4450 printer for $50. It is all in one printer with a scanner built-in. It uses Epson's 88 ink cart, which is pretty cheap compare to HP carts. I checked my currently installed, CUP driver database and it wasn't installed. Did anyone used this printer under Linux before? I really want to stick to Epson printers due to cheaper INKs and good compatibility with Linux. I mostly print black and white. I am kind of looking at all in one printers to save some space in the home office. It seems like the new Cannon (cheap ink carts) printers aren't supported very well under Linux anymore.

Thanks again.

IMHO, All-in-one office units uses very, very old hardware and may not work easily in Linux. I suggest using a laser printer. I have a Brother HL-5140 monochrome laser printer. It prints very fast (about 40+ pages per minute than what is advertised at 21 pages per minute) when the amount of pages is about forty or more pages.

I suggest use shelving to stack the printer, scanner, and fax in a small space.

The problems with inkjet printers are head miss-alignment, head clogging, waste of ink, and more expensive than they are worth. The head in HP inkjet printers gets replaced when ink runs out, so that is why they cost more. Epson inkjet printers have a fixed head when ink is replaced, so they have a limited life span depending if you use the ink refill kits and/or in a dry and dirty environment.

If you need reliability and color, a color laser printer could be used. A good color laser printer brand is Konica Minolta.

Hello netLogic,

Brother has also multifunction machines, i would suggest the Brother MFC-8460N. This is a Fax/Printer/Scanner/Copier. If you don't need the fax part go for a DCP-8065DN, this is Printer/Scanner/Copier with duplex unit. Both machines are based on the HL-5240 and have a network card. It is even possible to scan over network, this is a nice feature if you got also Windows machine in your network.

Best regards,

Yves
