No help I'm afraid as am in same boat. Same OS. Is this a thing with Suse 9.2?
Donjcook, sorry to hijack thread but hope there may be some common factors here that could be of use.
Alsaconf runs but doesn't give any audible sound.
Alsamixer - Nothing muted, BUT noticed no Master volume level.
The control is there but cannot increase volume from 0.
Checked /etc/asound.state and lo the control value true is there for it but no volume level section
My lspci as below:
Code:
0000:00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0)
Subsystem: ASRock Incorporation: Unknown device 4961
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 10
I/O ports at dc00
I/O ports at d800 [size=128]
Capabilities: [48] Power Management version 2
I cant quite run to $1,000,000,000,000 but would be eternally grateful if any help could be given.
Strangest thing is I've another system set up almost identically except for being a Duron instead of an Athlon that positively refuses to break anything.
More info for you to consider: I did a fresh install of Suse 9.2 and came up with same results. Recognise the chipse t , alsa config , alsamix, no sound. So its not an upgrade issue. Here is my lsmod, note I tried loading another driver in desperation, the driver that alsa likes starts with snd_ .

here is the best FAQ I've found , but it has so many quirky posts I dont know what to make of it ;-)
I am also having the same issue on my M7VIP board with A97 sound. Except my symptoms differ slightly. Alsaconf goes nicely but with no audible test sound... difference: instead main volume is adjustable in alsamixer but no PCM adjustment can be made from 0. Hope someone knows, this is diving me crazy!!
I also just purchased a replacement card a Thundersound 4.1 cheapo card from Frys to solve the problem, and there are no driver modules that are assigned to this card. Harddrake does not categorize it as a sound device. I have also compiled a few kernel versions to try and solve the issue... I just can't seem to win....
OK , so we now have 3 people with similar problem. We all run alsaconf, it recognizes our sound
chips, but at the end -- no sound when it plays the test sound, right?
We all have unmuted our options in alsamixer and raised volume up as far as we can, still
no sound right? we are all running Suse 9.2 , is this a suse issue?
I hope someone out there has some insight for us. Im stumped at this point .. but will keep trying
3 differences in my situation:
1) I am using Mandrake 10.1 Official Download.
2) I am UNABLE to adjust PCM volume
3) I am ABLE to adjust main volume.
Also, please note I do not hear any feedback when I plug in my speakers to the speaker output channel on the sound card. Leading me to believe there is no power going to this output. Whether this helps or not.. I do not know. All that I do know is that in volume related issues, I typically still hear a small amount of feedback...
Perhaps it is not exclusively an SUSE issue.... (?)
More info to ponder, my machine is dual boot, and the sound chip works
perfect in windows 98. ( irritating ) but it tells me that all cables and speakers etc
are functioning OK . Windows reports it on IRQ 5 btw.
Nope, all Mandrake linux. The dual boot should have no impact on how the software is invoked. Well, that is unless your are using a differing file system, etc. Then mount points could be different. Not really sure on that one.

This may be a module conflict. It appears you have the oss modules loaded as well as the alsa modules. You'll need to use one or the other. Try removing the ones you don't wish to use.
good luck.
I am using a M7VIP Biostar board (on the PC with the issue). Anyone else with some tips? It looks like it is just could be just a volume adjustment, but my problem is I cannot adjust the PCM volume. Is it normal for some cards not to have this ability? Curious as to what PCM is as a acronym for anyhow...?
