I finally got SuSE Linux Professional 8.1 booting and running after installing the 8.1 update to 8.0. (After I updated to 8.0, my system would not boot.)
I have a mysterious device; I cannot discern if it exists or not -- '/dev/hdd'.
At the end of this message is an excerpt of the output of 'dmesg'. (I apologize for the length, but there is no way to attach a file to a message.)
I am confused by the errors that occur in booting just before the login screen. I also do not understand why my USB Zip 250 drive is a SCSI device ('/dev/sda4'). I am also wondering if '/dev/hdd' and 'dev/sda4' could be the same device.
You can see in the excerpt below that there are repeated I/O errors for 'hdd' at startup (and a few for 'hdc', and I am not sure what this device is, either).
Can I change the system configuration to eliminate these boot errors? Also, I have read that SCSI emulation is required to use an IDE CD-RW drive. (I have a CD-RW and a DVD drive.) I feel as if 'ide-scsi' should not even be part of the system, but apparently it is -- and, if I have it enabled, why do I get the 'cdrom: open failed' error?
I run SuSE 8.1. I also get similar boot error messages about my CD-RW. They are annoying but harmless. If anybody knows how to get rid of them I would appreciate knowing, too. I expect them to go away when I upgrade to kernel 2.4.21 which is close to being released.
In addition to the CD-RW errors, I am getting some confusing information (errors?) about my external USB Zip 250 drive.
I do hope that someone will have a suggestion about these errors.
Cordially,
David
