Wink Strange problem with Sound

Hi,

I am having strange problems with sound on my OpenSuse 11 (2.6.25.20-0.4-default) on Gnome.

Sound worked previously on the system. I could play dvd'd on mplayer with smplayer as frontend. Play video's on the net and skype worked ok with an occasional problem of sound fading.

Recently one of my partition was accidently deleted and since I had backedup my files I was able to reinstall my system completely. Now one by one I am installing my packages.

Sound works perfectly on the net.

To play an mp4 file from my directory works only after I run alsaconf. If I reboot the system I have to run alsaconf again. Even that works only with vlc player and only picture and no sound on smplayer or totem player.

Sound on skype works only if I run Yast2 -> sound -> edit -> normal configuration. Every time I have run alsaconf, I cant use skype unless I configure sound through Yast2 aswell.

Either way I cannot play dvd's. only the picture and not sound on totem player, smplayer or vlc player.

My audio - lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

Also when I tried to run alsamixer this is what I got
alsamixer
*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: Connection refused

Please help as I have run out of options. I do not know what other information to include. As my knowledge on linux is limited, please give me the instructions to furnish further info or to try something.
Cheers,

Well you could try installing OSSv4? It's new but works, the only problem I have found is that CS:S has audio lag in wine. Though if you don't use wine much should be no problem. I don't remember where, but there are plenty of tutorials on the web for OSSv4. Other than that, you would probably have to uninstall everything that has ALSA and re-install linux sound base. =( I used to have to run alsaconf for debian a couple years back, now it works fine =S haha I remember there was a fix for it, but I don't remember how I had it set up, or if I set up alsaconf to run during boot I'm not sure.
