Strange mouse problem

Hi everyone!

I have this really strange problem with a mouse. It's an old Logitech optical mouse, and xorg refuses to use it with no apparent reason, while it perfectly works under windows. I've tried connecting it to both PS/2 and USB ports; in the first case, it tells me that the device doesn't exist (but /dev/input/mice is present), and the mouse light runs as usual. In the second, all I obtain is:

Code:
(WW) <default pointer>: No Device specified, looking for one...
(EE) <default pointer>: Cannot find which device to use.
(==) <default pointer>: Protocol: "Auto"
(**) Option "CorePointer"
(**) <default pointer>: Core Pointer
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: No Device specified.
(EE) <default pointer>: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "<default pointer>"
(II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
(WW) No core pointer registered
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Generic Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "NVIDIA Event Handler" (type: Other)
No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices
My xorg.conf mouse section is:

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier	"Configured Mouse"
	Driver "mouse"
	Option "CorePointer"
	Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
	Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
	Option "Emulate3Buttons"	"false"
EndSection
I also tried commenting it, to use the default configuration, but it still doesn't work.

Please help I just don't know what to do

The most important options in your xorg.conf are "Device" and "Protocol".

You don't state which distro you are using but Device" "/dev/input/mice" would be incorrect on my system; mine is "/dev/input/mouse". Check this by doing cd into /dev/input and then ls.

If this is OK, then try running xorgconfig and specify your actual mouse in the relevant section. But first decide whether you are going to use it as a PS2 or USB as the "Protocol" option will be different for each. You may find that xorgconfig changes the "ExplorerPS/2" if this is incorrect for your Logitech.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for helping I'm on a Debian Unstable. The "mice" input device is present under /dev/input, and are also present mouse0, mouse1, mouse2 and mouse3 but none of them seem to work.

I'll try with xorgconfig and let you know

Thank you again

Have you tried
Code:
    Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
instead?

Yes I did; it didn't work the worst thing is that the mouse had been working perfectly with the default configuration (mouse settings commented in xorg.conf) for a long period of time before that error popped out Maybe an upgrade could be the cause?

Problem solved I had to load the mousedev module. Now seems to work fine. The audio anyway stopped working, but that's another question.. Thanks everyone for help!
