speedtouch usb on redhat enterprise 3 clone

Hi I`m running whitebox enterprise 3 which is a clone of rhel 3 after a kernel update the install script for the modem (speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net) cannot find either the n_hdlc.o and ppp_synctty files despite the fact that both are present in /lib/modules/2.4.21-9.0.1.EL/unsupported/drivers/char/n_hdlc.o and
/lib/modules/2.4.21-9.0.1.EL/unsupported/drivers/net/ppp_synctty.o respectively
Both are similarly located in the original kernel install (2.4.21-4.EL). What I do not understand is why modprobe finds these files and runs the modem fine, but in the updated kernel it fails to locate them?
ie
modprobe n_hdlc.o
modprobe: Cant locate module n_hdlc.o
The kernel configs as far as I can tell are the same. Should I try a custom build of the latest kernel which is something I have never done successfully before
