Exclamation Soundcard / Modem Support

I am new to Linux, (child of the gui generation) but I am trying to learn so i hope some of you will bear with me.

Linux has been great so far but unfortunately I cannot get my soundcard or modem to work.

The modem is a BT Yahoo ASDL speedtouch. Any help would be appreciated.

The soundcard is an AC 97.

Neither of these items will work under Mandrake 9.2 or SUSE 9.1

Please could some of the more experienced give me some advice as to how (a complete beginner) could get these items to work.

my specs are below, thankyou for your patience with a newbie!

It helps to wait a while - 5 minutes isn't long enough. Since this question comes up a lot, you may want to Search for the answer while you wait.

I have already looked through hours of forums but I cant seem to find the answer to my problem as everyone seems to be running different hardware, software, distros. lol. Maybe I was hasty in completely deleting windows....

Actually, which Toshiba is it? I have the A10 (2gig Celeron) and Mandy 9.2 and 10 and Slackware 9.1 and Fedora have all worked with the laptop. Under Slack, I had to go to the Alsa website to get the sound working.

ac97 is a codec used by about 5 current sound cards, usually the i810 and the sis7012 as well as the 7014, the important thing is to find out what you've got...

/sbin/lspci

Or for mandrake...

/usr/sbin/lspcidrake

That'll tell us what chipset your card is and we can tell what module goes with it.

As for the ADSL modem, USB or ethernet? PPPOE or DHCP?

Cheers,

Finegan
