modem conflicting with soundcard

Hi,

I'm trying to set up FC4 on my laptop, that has almost identical hardware as the one written about in the following link:
(http://oasis.dit.upm.es/~jantonio/personal/aspire1410/)

an excerpt:
Quote:
But... wait... I cannot hear any sound!!!. Aghhhh, this is the FC4 modem driver, snd_intel8x0m, that conflicts with sound card and gets it unusable....
No problemo:

* Disable Intel AC'97 modem in .config kernel options
* Add snd_intel8x0m to /etc/hotplug/blacklist
* Or rename snd_intel8x0m.ko to snd_intel8x0m.ko.old in /lib/modules/xxxx dir
It appears that I have a similar problem: the soundcard is detected fine, but won't play when i hit 'test sound' under soundcard detection.

for the three points mentioned above, i'm not sure if i should be doing them all, or just one of them. I tried point #2 (adding it to /etc/hotplug/blacklist), but it didn't seem to have any effect.

any suggestions?

Thanks!

update:

the author of the article replied to me, and said that for:

* Disable Intel AC'97 modem in .config kernel options,

i'm apparently supposed to re-compile the kernel... not sure how to do that, however. any comments?

thanks!

yep it certainly is the snd_intel8x0m module isn't it

first try the third option of just renaming the module

i renamed the .ko file, and now i get:

snd_ac97_codec 75961 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm 100169 3 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_page_alloc 9669 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

and the sound works!

so if i understood this correctly: the kernel allocates a certain amount of memory for each module, and in this case, both the modem and the soundcard were given the same memory, and so they were basically fighting for resources. is that right? but if this is so, then what about something like:

snd_pcm 100169 3 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss

where we see 3 modules assigned to snd_pcm?

thanks for all the help! this forum (and the people on it) is awesome.
