I turn PCBUSPower to disable and copy your modules.conf but it didn't work for me.

Heres what happend:

# modprobe cs4232

/lib/modules/2.4.4-4GB/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o: init_module: No such device

Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters

/lib/modules/2.4.4-4GB/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.4-4GB/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o failed

/lib/modules/2.4.4-4GB/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o: insmod cs4232 failed

I have an IBM 600E (2645-3AX)

any suggestion?

Hey there, fellow Thinkpad users, I feel your pain on the sound thing. I'm using a TP365XD.

I've found (so far) that tpctl is a total waste of time. I got sound to work on my system, using Mandrake 8.0, by using the sndconfig utility and the parameters in my TP365 manual. That plus ensuring the permissions were correct on /dev/dsp, /dev/mixer*, etc., and all kinds of sounds burst forth from this venerable old machine .

You didn't know about the BIOS config tool in IBM iSeries laptops (and every other laptop IBM made in the last 5 years) ?

I err, suspected this of IBM employees ever since hearing about the BRS and the AMD failure problems.

Bert

PS That 'AMD failure' was due to too much hot air being generated by you and your colleagues, I think.

Luckily I work for IBM, and found some internal resources, that are not available to the public about this issue. This is for the 600E Thinkpad series. As a note, my Thinkpad is a 600E-4AA.

You must use the DOS PS2 utility and disable PCIBUSPOWER in the power management setup. This is a MUST or it will not work, and this is the key.

Once you have done this, reboot back into Linux. Compile your Kernel (Mine is 2.4.17) with sound support and the CS4232 (PnP) OSS drivers only, nothing else.

Then add the following to your /etc/modules.conf

alias sound-slot-0 cs4232
alias char-major-14 cs4232
alias synth opl3
post-install cs4232 /sbin/modprobe "-k" "adlib_card" "ad1848" "uart401"
options -k cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0
options adlib_card io=0x388

Once these are added; type ' modprobe cs4232 ' and you should be returned to the command prompt. It will report nothing.

That should be it, I then load X and loaded up the XMMS and played an MP3 file.

Hope this helps everyone!
Hi

I have a Thinkpad 600E 2645-5BU ...........How do I recompile the kernel with sound support "cs4232" .............have done the rest of what you recommended ..........Thanks
