i'm a user who loves chatting gaming and listening to mp3's i download, well what is bad for me is i can only do 1 of these things at a time for some reason, for example--im listening to an mp3 and then i load gaim, someone messages me but no sound when i press alt+ctrl+f2 (terminal 2, which i loaded X from) it says that /dev/dsp resource is currently unavailable, but now if i close the xmms then reload gaim my sounds work....:-\ can anyone help me fix this problem?

hmm..hopefully

well, i kept get an error from that X was trying to use OSS, well that for one isnt sound i use so i removed that from the kernel...and i've been currently using VIA 686A audio codec, but i did some research on my mobo and did some digging in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and found out that not only is there the via 686a audio codec, but also an AC 97 codec and AC 97 is built onto my mobo. so maybe i've hit the jackpot...maybe not

also in slack 9.0 on line 220, it tries to do a /sbin/nodprobe

so if any of you have the AC 97 audio codec and wish to use it, uncomment the line and also fix 'nodprobe' supposed to be 'modprobe'

anyways i'll reply later if it worked or not for me

Are you using either KDE or Gnome?

If you are using KDE, make Gaim put it sounds out thru ESD, and run this command when starting KDE:

artsdsp esd &

That will give you sound from KDE, XMMS, Gaim, etc. The only thing that I can't get to work yet is sound from browser plugins in Konqueror when artsdsp is running. Konqueror tries to pipe sound thru that and only one instance of it can be running at once, so things get messed up then. But mp3s and IM work well with that route, so try it out if you are using KDE.
