Sound from CD-ROM drives via IDE?

Is this possible with Linux yet? Or do we still have to rely on the sound cables going directly from the CD-ROM to the soundcard?

Still need the cables to go from the CD to the sound card.

Bah humbug. Why is it that for Windows you don't, but for Linux you do?

Because Windows has a built in driver that reads music cd's as .wav files, and plays them through media player. You may be able to play your cd's directly from your cdrom with xmms. But I have a system, so I don't need to use my cdrom as a cdplayer. Try playing around with some media apps and see what happens, or just open up your box, and attach the cable to your sound card to your cdrom. It will take you like 2 minutes.

Yes it is possible.

The latest version xmms does digital audio extraction.
