Because Windows has a built in driver that reads music cd's as .wav files, and plays them through media player. You may be able to play your cd's directly from your cdrom with xmms. But I have a system, so I don't need to use my cdrom as a cdplayer. Try playing around with some media apps and see what happens, or just open up your box, and attach the cable to your sound card to your cdrom. It will take you like 2 minutes.
