Sorry... but trouble with iPod again (Knoppix on Dell)
Hello everyone
I know there have been a lot of threads on using iPods as external hard disks under linux, and it just gets repetitive. However, I have just not been able to come to a solution, even after STFW !!!
Anyway here are some specifications..
If I am not much mistaken, mine is a PC iPod (meaning I guess it has vfat partitions) and I connect it using a USB cable, which means I must be looking for it under the /sd* devices, right?
I have a DELL Inspiron 9100 with 6 USB ports. I boot with the Knoppix 3.9 CD in it, and once the welcome screen is shown, I plug in the iPod and just press Enter. Nothing happens.
I reboot, and this time I plug in the iPod after pressing on Enter. It takes me over the regular sequence of identifying my hardware
Here are some more details:
Knoppix 3.9 that I have runs kernel 2.6.11
During the hardware identification, nothing is shown, apart from USB found, managed by HotPlug
Earlier threads in this forum explain some of the following:
1. Try file -s /dev/sda , file -s /dev/sdb and so on. I get the same message :
/dev/sda: writable, no read permission (even under root, or sudo)
2. In KDE control panel, set it to show all mounted and unmounted devices. Did that, though I generally start with knoppix 2 and use command line rather than GUI.
Here are some relevant lines from my dmesg:
usbcore: registered new driver usbfs
usbcore: registered new driver hub
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1d.7[D] -> GSI 23 (level low) -> IRQ 23
ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB2 EHCI Controller
ehci_hcd: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1
and so on for a couple of my hubs and buses
anyhow, here come some interesting information
ohci_hcd: 2004 Nov 08 USB 1.1 'Open' Host Controller (OCHI) Driver PCI
ub: sizeof ub_scsi_cmd 64 ub_dev 2504
usbcore: registered USB Mass Storage Driver
usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage
USB Mass Storage Support Registered
... and then a couple of lines regarind 1394 IEEE port
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
uba: device 2 capacity nsec 0 bsize 512
Unable to identify CD-ROM format
Hope this helps. My Windows partition has crashed, and the only way I am able to recover my data is using the trust Knoppix of course, as it indentifies all my NTFS and FAT partitions. I could use my network to ftp my files to another machine, but I would prefer having it on my iPod if possible.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot
