Slow Xorg performance on PPC Gentoo w/ Voodoo3

Okay, I've got a tricky question for y'alls: I've got a Powermac 8500 with a Voodoo3 card and I'm afraid that the Xorg performance is somewhat less than stellar. I can get about 30fps in SNES 9x when it's running at the size of a postage stamp, but any larger an the performance drops off considerably, and Firefox lags when I try to scroll through pages.

So, the first question is whether or not I can speed this up and if my Xorg config is remotely close to where it need to be. Link here.

Secondly, and this one's a stretch, is there any way to get OpenGL working on linux *without* Glide? Sadly, Glide doesn't have a PPC port yet, and I'm not really holding my breath, however, OpenGL should be able to access (by my understanding) the Voodoo3 hardware without needing Glide.

Xorg.conf excerpt:
Code:
Section "Module"

# This loads the DBE extension module.

Load "dbe" # Double buffer extension

# This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables
# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.
    SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
    EndSubSection

# This loads the font modules
    Load "type1"
    Load "speedo"
    Load "freetype"
# Load "xtt"

    Load	"GLcore"
