SiS sound and video

Two questions; one each about getting the SiS650 on-board video and SiS7012-driven Avance AC97 on-board sound on my laptop to work. All this is done in RH8.0 on the 2.4.20 kernel.

Sound: I've read enough horror stories in this forum to know AC97 is not user-friendly. But, not only is the SiS7012 an option when recompiling the kernel, but I also have the driver offered by SiS. No matter what I do, it doesn't work, though. It lists in dmesg (correctly showing an IRQ of 10), and in lspci -vv (though this shows it having an IRQ of 0) but will NOT work. When running sndconfig, it says that the device is disabled and PnP OS should be turned OFF in the BIOS. Unfortunately I don't have an option for PnP OS in my bios. Any suggestions?

Video: Courtesy of a different thread here about the SiS650 video, I got the driver for it. But... as I'm using RH8.0, my gcc is version 3 and the SiS650 driver was compiled using gcc version 2, and as I keep being told when trying to install it, "this is known not to work". So this is possibly a stupid question, but how do I get rid of gcc3 so I can recompile with gcc2? I tried removing the gcc package using the RH disk, and installed an rpm version of gcc2.95 I got, but my system is telling me the kernel I recompiled after that was compiled with gcc3.

This is driving me absolutely insane, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Where do you got the driver from?If it is from http://www.winischhofer.net it should work.I use it on gentoo with all gcc 3.2.Opengl doesn't work though - don't now why yet.I didn't try to recompile the kernel or xfree there with gcc2.95 to get 3d acceleration going but I doubt that this would help.It does work fine with debian.Do you got the trident driver in the kernel for sound?Works fine for me with OSS.

I'm having an identical problem with sound in Mandrake 9.0 (kernel 2.4.19). I have the same same chipset as you but my video worked out of the box so I'm not sure how to help you with that.

When I run sndconfig I get the same messages suggesting that the SiS7012 is supported but disabled.

Looking at dmesg gave me the following:

PCI: Enabling device 00:02.7 (0000 -> 0001)
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin C of device 00:02.7. Please try using pci=biosirq.
unable to grab IRQ 0
Intel ICH soundcard not found or device busy

Which is slightly different to yours.

I've also tried the driver from SiS which was useless.

If I have any luck getting mine working I'll let you know.

Amos.
