Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

SD cards and sucj on Arch

Im using Arch. I had been having lots of issues with my system after being on vacation for 2 weeks and coming back and being bomabarded with updates, and finding that I now had Duke rather than Voodoo. So I did I new install of Duke and everything is good so far...except when I put in an SD card or connect my digital camera it doesnt seem to be rceognized as I cant access it. It doesnt appear on the desktop, or anywhere for that matter. Being that Im still fairly new to Linux Im not sure whats up. Im assuming I need to install drivers of some sort, but Ive searched docs all night and havent found what it would be. Does anyone know if I need to install drivers, and if so what they are, and if not what might the problem be? Thanks..Im sure this is a newbie kind of question, but I appreciate the help

Arch Linux, while a great distro, might be a tad difficult for a newbie.

Was this working previously on your pre-update setup?

You need to make sure that you have the correct HAL & DBUS packages for your distribution. Older versions of these software packages may not work correctly with newer kernels.

I could be wrong, but I'd doubt that very much.

Your USB devices should appear as /dev/sd* devices. You may have a sata hard disk which comes up as sda*. In that case, any USB devices would appear as /dev/sdb*. Remove all USB devices and type
Code:
ls /dev/sd*
then plug in (say) an SD card, wait a few seconds and run the command again. If something new comes up, then you should be able to mount the partitions on the device with something like:
Code:
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt
If you want this to happen automatically, you'll need to research how to configure HAL & DBUS properly.

HTH.
