formatting multimedia cards, flash cards

Silly question?
how do you format usb MMC cards?
i've tried mkfs, tried fdisking them, what does one do?

There's not a great deal of info on them, even thought they seem to work
quite nicely.

on my Suse, when i plug it in it adds an entry to the /etc/fstab on the fly
and removes it when i unplug.
Is this normal Linux or a bit of Suse trickery?
