Thought it was solved but next time I booted it up the same problem persisted. So I left SUSE 10.1 behind and installed Fedora 6 (I know 7 is around the corner). Fedora recognized my video and mouse driver at the very beginning of the installation. Everything is working fine with Fedora 6. I like it! It is causing no problems at all. Very smooth.

My solution

I also had the problem with the graphics driver that firefox scrolled in waves. Here is how I solved it.
I first had to install

x11-video-fglrxG01
ati-fglrx-kmp-[KERNELTYPE]

from the ATI repository, where for me [KERNELTYPE] was "default". The first package actually was already installed, but the second was missing.

After that the following procedure worked:

1. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.cong as root by replacing the driver "flgrx" by "****",
2. kill the X-server via Ctrl-Alt-Backspace (or call "init 3" as root),
3. log in as root (on the console) and call sax2. Then sax writes the new xorg.conf.

On my computer this now works fine.
