Screen flickers when computer loads?!?

Hi!

Ive just installed Ubuntu and everything works allright except that the screen flickers when the computer loads. it happens at any resolution and refreshrates i cant get rid of it! X uses i810 driver and it is an 21" monitor. dont know what kind of gfx card it is cause i just found the comp in a dusty old room =) its an old comp about 800mhz. in console mode alt-f1 and so on it works fine.. no flickering.. only in x.

Any ideas?

When you say "when the computer loads", do you mean the Ubuntu splash screens that hide the initialization messages? And that when you finally log in it's fine? If so, and I'm no expert by any means, I'd say Ubuntu is using the vesa driver through the load, and then switching to the accelerated driver once you log in.

You might not notice it so much in console mode, unless you were to load something that fills up the screen with colour like an ncurses program (I can't think of a good example except for maybe "make menuconfig" in /usr/src/linux-$version).

What's the output of the following commands:
Code:
/sbin/lspci
Code:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
as well as
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
and
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW
If you're using Gnome, you might want to consider a more lightweight window manager like xfce4 or WindowMaker and see if that helps - you computer just might not be powerful enough to run the latest and greatest smoothly.
