Hi I'm trying to connect my Cannon DX 4400, printer/scanner. I've looked at other posts on this site, tried these but to no avail. I can see the hardware listed, but can't activate it any way, any clues?

Is it really a Cannon (scary!)? All searches for DX4400 lead to Epson. Canon has BJC-4400 series, but no DX.
From what I can find I have tried all the options offered from Epsom
This statement is good enough if you call a technician into your home. They will come, diagnose it and fix it. For self help with aid of these forums you need to do better than that. You need to start driver installation as described in Epson online documentation, step by step, and if you encounter an error then you post it here and we will look into it. Currently we know exactly nothing about your setup except you are running some flavor of Linux.

I have an older Epson (Perfection 2400 Photo) scanner and I haven't needed to download any drivers for it. (Maybe years ago but no longer.) The GIMP's "File->Create->Xsane: Device dialog..." just works. But then, the SANE web site shows my scanner as supported. No such luck for the DX 4400. Sometimes, I've found that a closely-related device for a device is supported and have had some luck using that driver. Epson lists the DX4400 as being in the same family as the CX4300 and the CX5500. Sadly, neither of those are listed as supported by the SANE backend.
What software are you using to try and access your DX4400? Does it have any additional support since Epson nor SANE (but the SANE team may not have been able to obtain the necessary technical information to allow them to add the support) chose not to support your scanner for use with Linux?
Epson website shows DX4400 as supported by their Image Scan! driver. Then it may be the same problem as in this thread: the driver requires libsane, while most distros nowadays use libsane1.
Distribution: Ubuntu based stuff for the most part

There are multiple scanning protocols, so depending on which it uses determines how you will access it. The most common one just works with sane, while others take tweaks or you have to use the scan tool provided by the mgf.
