SB sound card not detected in FC3

Just bought a Gateway 506GR box and installed FC3 on it. Most things work fine, but no sound card detected - no MP3s

[root@cosmo ~]# uname -a
Linux cosmo 2.6.10-1.760_FC3 #1 Wed Feb 2 00:14:23 EST 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[root@cosmo ~]# /sbin/lspci

05:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82562ET/EZ/GT/GZ - PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller (rev 03)
[root@cosmo ~]#

As you can see, the card is a run of the mill SB Live 24-bit. It seems to be there, but none of the software seems to detect it. Starting xmms gets:

** WARNING **: alsa_get_mixer(): Attaching to mixer hw:0 failed: No such file or directory

** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Failed to open pcm device (default): No such file o r directory

I get the feeling I'm missing something obvious. Who wants to be the first to make me feel dumb for having missed something simple?

Cheers,

Patrick

I have a Creative SoundBlaster of a similar variety, directly from the store. It doesn't have any problems. Have you tried running the "Soundcard Detection"? The GUI version returns this:
  • Vendor: Creative
  • Model: Labs SB Live! EMU10k1
  • Module: snd-emu10k1
That I recall, the EMU10k1 is required for the soundacrd. If you don't have it, go and find it.

More data on SB card issue

Hi Kenji,

The GUI says "No soundcards detected"

[root@cosmo ~]# locate snd-emu10k1
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.667/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1-synth.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.667/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.667smp/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1-synth.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.667smp/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.10-1.760_FC3/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1-synth.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.10-1.760_FC3/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.ko
[root@cosmo ~]#

It looks like the module is there, if I'm not mistaken.

Hello,
I'm sorry I can't help with the sound problem right yet but I'm hoping you can tell me what I'm doing wrong with the video. I too just bought a 506gr and installed (am trying to install fc3) the install goes fine up til the "finish" after the reboot. Then my screen goes dark as if the monitor (gateway ev700) was put in power save or something. I can log in via ssh from another machine but I'm not sure what to try to fix this. The machine is at home so I can't provide the nice uname and lspci info from here.
Thank you,

re: SB sound card not detected in FC3

Nobody seems to have any idea for my sound card issue.

I bought just the main box and am using an old Sun monitor.

I'm guessing the point where your monitor goes blank is the first time X is starting with the monitor params you gace during the installation. You might try something very basic like 800x600 during installation just to get it to start, then try tweaking the monitor settings (SystemSetting->Display) afterword.

If you ssh in, is there anything related to this issue in /var/log/messages?

Cheers,

Patrick
