Ok so I managed to get Ubuntu installed on my computer (atlast).
The problem was That I got errors like this ata3.01: failed to set xgerimage (err-mask=0x40) etc, When I tried to install Ubuntu or start up the live cd.
I searched lots of forums including (linuxquestions) but none of their solutions helped me.
So I started to look my SATA chip/driver maker Jmicron, went to their homepage and found this:
Question:What are the differences between Legacy mode (IDE) and AHCI mode?
Answer:
Legacy mode support s OS through legacy IDE driver. Most SATA functions are not supported in Legacy mode, like SATA II 3G, NCQ, HotPlug and etc. JMicron Technology Corp. delivers the worldwide first AHCI compliant eSATA controller and now most of the Operating Systems are "Native Support", which enables SATA II 3G, NCQ, and Hotplug on JMB36X SATA / eSATA controllers.
(google jmicron and navigate to support->faq)
I was like "oh what the hell lets give it a try" (though that above text wasn't so relevant regarding this matter). So I booted my computer went to BIOS and navigated to: Integrated peripherals->onChip sata device->sata mode and changed the sata mode to AHCI (which was IDE) saved my settings and booted. Then OMG I booted up to the Ubuntu cd (
8.04 Release Candidate) and I got the live cd working, and I installed Ubuntu with no problems at all.
READ THIS.
If you're using Windows Vista or XP etc. check this link cause changing SATA mode when Vista is already installed will probably cause BSOD (SURPRISE
) atleast it did it for me.
(Google "ahci" and go to the wikipedia page, read it) can't post urls cause this is my first post.
Hope this helps.
My system specs are these: ABIT IP35pro, Intel Core 2 Duo E6850, G.Skill 2x2GB, 4 SATA drives, 1 IDE DVD/CDROM drive , 8800GTS (G92).
