Ubuntu 7.04 SATA Drive Install Issue

Hi All,

I've just gotten a new COMPAQ Presario Notebook with the following specs:

- AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core TL-60
- 15.4" WXGA Bright View Wide Screen
- NVIDIA GForce Go 6150 w/ Ports
- IMPRINT Finish + Microphone(s)
- 2GB DDR System Memory (2Dimm)
- 160 GB 5400 SATA HDD
- Light Scribe Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/ DL
- 802.11 pre-n WLAN & Bluetooth

It has Vi$ta loaded, and I want to wipe the entire 160GB SATA drive and install Ubuntu 7.04. I did burn both the 32 and 64-bit CDs with the default M$ burner app Roxio, then used QParted to wipe the drive and format the entire thing to ext3.

When I tried to install UBUNTU the Live CD hangs. From what I am reading SATA drives seem to be an issue. Am I right or am I wrong? Any help, please!

By the way, previous burned CDs of older versions of Ubuntu do not work also.

No, not true as I have Ubuntu 7.04 running in a Sata II.

My guess is the Ubuntu installer may using CRT monitor scanning frequencies for your LCD monitor, as I have a geforce 7600GT video matched perfectly by Ubuntu with the "nv" driver.

You can do two things

(a) Press control+alt+backspace to get into the terminal mode and edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to alter the monitor frequencies, save the file and try to go back to the graphic screen by typing "startx". The success of this method depends on how far you are into the installer.

(b) Opt for terminal installation in Ubuntu.

Does it boot all the way to the X windows Desktop and then when you attempt to install it hangs or does it hang when booting the live cd.
if its during boot whats the last thing it says or any errors that it gives you.

saikee,

Thanks -- I think that you are on to something. I've been doing a good deal of Googling, and it seems that this should not be so difficult. I'll try the "Terminal" installation later tonight.

exvor,

It is not a matter of getting error messages. I did an install of Linux Mint Bianca that I had around just to check that the nwer distros that I'd burned with Roxio were not defective. Linux Mint installed, but after the Welcome Screen it just went black. With Ubuntu 7.04 the installer just hung..

This time around rather than use QParted to wipe my HDD I'll let the installer do the wiping / partitioning.

Thanks for your quick responses.

try booting the live cd with the options "live noapic nolapic" (without the quotes.) thats what worked for me.
Oh yeah, hit ESC at the initial bootscreen to get to a prompt.
good luck.

rgingels,

Thanks - I've added your idea to my list as follows:

1. acpi=off - Press F6
2. noapic
3. noapic nolapic/acpi=off
4. pci=conf1
5. live noapic nolapic - Hit ESC @ initial boots.

I plan to re-burn the distro downloads using the Nero 7 trial version versus the default Vi$ta burner Roxio. I never cared for Roxio. I want my K3B back. LOL!

Thanks again for your suggestion.

rgingels,

I downloaded both Ubuntu 7.04, and Linux Mint Cassandra. I then burned both with my Machine burner, and Lite-On peripheral Burner.

Intead of running any changes on Boot, I ran the Lite-On version of Linux Mint. It ran so well until I could not change the screen size to change my Time Zone. The map was too large.

Why do I keep coming back to the old days of Dapper, and a Notebook?

Personally, I like Linux Mint of the .deb Distros out there. SuSe has left me lacking.

Any sugesstions?
