SATA on linux

please help me on this

processor: amd 2600+ xp
RAM: 256 DDR
HDD: Samsung SP0812C SCSI disk drive
VT8237- sata controller
red hat 6 2.4.20

hey,
i have windows xp on my SATA drive...cant seem to load linux on it.
so what i did was that i borrowed an ide drive(4 freaking gb)on which i ve installed red hat 9.

i am okay with linux on this hard drive but i do need it it to see
the SATA drive because you know 4 gb is an insult for all purposes.
so anybody worked a kernel patch for making linux see the sata drive
need that only for storage purposes

much appreciated,

dhananjay

Sata support didn't officially start coming into the 2.4 kernels until 2.4.27. The 2.4.28-pre3 kernel has pretty much backported all the sata modules from the 2.6 kernels so if you want to stick with the 2.4 kernels, that's the one I'd try. 2.4.27 might work OK(check the change log) but some sata controllers didn't get in there till 2.4.28-pre1 which is when there was a huge sata update(libata). For example, the very common intel sata controller, ICH5, didn't make it into the 2.4 kernels until 2.4.28-pre1 IIRC.

if u check the output of lspci u may find it recognised as a scsi drive in which case u could use it as such
