Rockwell chipped modem not connecting

Hello, I have an external modem hooked to a serial port, it is a rockwell chipped unit - details:RCVDL56ACFW/SP,R6772-22,Rockwell 97,9850,B73220.5,Mexico. I've built a Linux box out of used parts and the OS (SUSE 10.0)operates magnificent apart from the lack of internet connectivity. I've gone through Yast and entered all the correct details to hook upto my ISP. When attempting to connect, the following lights on the modem illuminate : CS,RS,TR,MR and stay in that state until I tell the OS to disconnect. I believe OH and RD are meant to be lit up when connected to the net. Can anyone tell me if the SUSE drivers are still relevant for this chip? Or do I have an issue with my ISP (Dodo in Australia). Thanks for any help

SD and RD are supposed to flicker when you dial out and handshake.
While running MR TR CD RTS CTS OH lights are all on.

The serial drivers should be OK.

Have you tried dialing out directly via the terminal - either piping to the modem or manually running wvdial?

# echo "atdt 5551234" > /dev/ttyS0

Watch for flickering lights - listen for dialtone and dialing.
(no sound? # echo "atv" > /dev/ttyS0)

hang up with # echo "atz" > /dev/ttyS0

... of course the serial device in question should be your modem port.
You may like a symbolic link from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS0 too.

Anyway - iff ttyS0-3 does not work for your modem, then the modem is broken.

If you can dial, but not connect, check the dialer script (usually wvdial) and try dialing from terminal

# wvdial

Thanks for the advice Simon but I'm too green for the terminal stuff as this is my first install of Suse. The modem is ok as it functions perfectly under windows. I think I have issues with my ISP rather than the computer. Nevertheless I'm going to buy another modem that is fully compatible with Linux and test that. Cheers.

So long as you have reason to believe the modem is not linux compatible. generally, external serial modems are all 100% linux compatible.
