rh 9.0 = kernel panic with new motherboard

I got a Soyo P4VTP motherboard with onboard SATA. The SATA harddrive (Western Digital 250 GB) has Windows XP on it and I am trying to get Redhat 9 to work on a seperate (Western Digital 30 GB) IDE harddrive.

I have tried everything I can think of before and after install (unplugging the SATA drive, disabling it, etc.) because I have a feeling it is what is causing problems. The install seems fine but I get a Kernel Panic whenever I try to load it.

Anyone have any suggestions? I just want to be able to choose in BIOS at boot whether I want to use the Linux drive or the Windows drive (and I want the Linux drive to work).

Thanks

Rh 9's kernel is old enough so that's there's actually NO sata support in there at all. You can just upgrade kernels, unfortunately you'll probably have to go as far as 2.6.7, which means also upgrading modutils to the new module-init tools.

Or.... you can upgrade to Fedora Core 2, which apparently is as easy as dropping in FC2 CDs and it'll whallop over your old install, but I haven't tested it... seen it as an option, but just obliterated the old install, but it should work.

Thank you.

FC 2 worked fine, except for no sound from my soundblaster live, but i'm sure that is a rather easy fix.

Yeah they switched up to ALSA with the 2.6 kernel, an entirely different set of kernel modules. One thing to look for is that it may scan the available speaker plugs in the opposite direction, so the other channel may be the live one. The other thing to look for, open a mixer, alsa used to be muted by default, might still be...

Cheers,
